City: Canberra

Australian Capital Territory · late-night guide

Canberra after dark.

Canberra’s nights are small but proper: no lockouts, a tight cluster of basement clubs and live rooms in Civic, cocktail bars a short walk up in Braddon, and pubs south of the lake in Kingston.

Coming up in Canberra

From Fun Time Pony, Assembly, Gang Gang Cafe & Bar, read from their own listings each morning.

Civic

The city centre is where Canberra stays up latest: basement clubs, jazz in hidden bars and gig rooms along Alinga Street and Bunda Street, all within a few minutes’ walk of the light rail.

Braddon

Lonsdale Street and Mort Street are Canberra’s easy-going bar strip, good for a pub start, a whisky or a rooftop view before heading into Civic.

Kingston & Griffith

South of the lake, the Kingston Foreshore and the old Kingston shops trade more in pubs, live acoustic sets and long nights at the bar than big clubs.

Dickson, the inner north & Belconnen

Past Civic, light rail follows Northbourne Avenue to Dickson’s pub and restaurant strip, with neighbourhood live-music pubs in Lyneham and Downer, while Belconnen, built around Lake Ginninderra, has a lakeside pub strip and an independent live-music room.
