Sydney, by area

CBD & Darling Harbour

The big rooms and the late basements. Superclubs off George Street, techno and house under the old pubs on Sussex and Pitt Streets, and the harbourside clubs at Cockle Bay.

Oxford Street & Darlinghurst

Sydney’s rainbow strip and its densest run of late venues. Drag, pop and superclub energy around Taylor Square, with Club 77’s techno and Oxford Art Factory’s live-then-DJ nights a few streets away.

Kings Cross & Potts Point

The Cross is dancing again: the old World Bar reborn as Kings Cross Pavilion, a 5am house-and-techno room upstairs at the Potts Point Hotel, and late rooms along Bayswater Road.

Surry Hills & Chippendale

Pubs with proper DJs, dive-bar dance floors and day parties. Good for a night that starts with dinner and ends somewhere sweaty.

Newtown, Enmore & Erskineville

The Inner West’s queer-friendly, arty end of the night: multi-room pubs, drag, and warehouse-style dance floors.

Bondi & Coogee

Beach pubs with DJs and gigs. Most close around midnight, so it’s the start of the night, not the end.

Manly & North Sydney

Harbour-side and beachfront pubs across the bridge, with beer-garden dance floors and weekend day sessions.

Moore Park & Eveleigh

Big touring concerts and immersive arts in the Hordern, Liberty Hall and Carriageworks precincts, a short walk from the light rail.

Around NSW

Byron Bay

Backpacker central on the north coast: live music most nights on Jonson Street, a duelling-piano pub and a DJ bar that both go until 3am, and band nights out at the Arts Factory.

Nimbin & the Northern Rivers

Nimbin is tiny: nightlife here means the pub, the odd big night at the Bush Theatre, and a drive (with a designated driver) to Lismore or a country pub for anything later. There are no cabs to flag down out here, so plan your ride home before you start.

Newcastle

Two hours north of Sydney: multi-level clubs on King Street, an intimate dance room on Darby Street and solid live pubs.

Wollongong

Ninety minutes south: a two-floor dance bar, a rooftop with DJs and a proper rock-and-90s live room.
