Queensland · late-night guide
Up the coast, after dark.
Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Airlie Beach, Townsville and Cairns: the clubs, band rooms and late spots worth your night on the way north, and how to get home after.
Brisbane
Fortitude Valley
Brisbane’s club district around Brunswick Street Mall: three-floor dance clubs, country, and a seven-nights LGBTQIA+ megaclub.
Brisbane City, West End & Caxton Street
A riverside beer hall under the Story Bridge, a bank-vault live room in the city, drag in West End and the party strip on Caxton Street.
Gold Coast
Surfers Paradise & Southport
Orchid Avenue and Cavill Avenue are the Coast’s main club strip and a Safe Night Precinct, so venues can serve until 3am. Southport, a few tram stops north, has the best small band room on the Coast.
Broadbeach & Mermaid Beach
The Coast’s other Safe Night Precinct, a bit more grown-up than Surfers: a superclub and cocktail lounges near the tram. Mermaid Beach, just south, has the Coast’s queer-owned bar.
Miami, Burleigh & Coolangatta
The southern beaches are for live music more than clubbing: a street-food and gig precinct at Miami, a warehouse venue in Burleigh’s back streets and a classic band room at Cooly. Venues here finish by 2am at the latest.
Townsville
Flinders Street & the CBD
The main late-night strip and Townsville’s Safe Night Precinct: a club, Irish pubs, a brewpub and the new riverside wharves within a short walk, with the secure taxi rank at the eastern end.
The Strand & North Ward
Waterfront pubs along the beachfront and one block back. The easy choice for sundowners and weekend live music before heading into town.
West End & Garbutt
West of the CBD are Townsville’s touring band rooms: The Warehouse at the far end of Flinders Street and the Dalrymple at Garbutt.
Cairns
Cairns CBD
The late core of town around Shields, Spence, Lake, Grafton and Abbott Streets. Backpacker clubs, pubs and live music within a few blocks, and the only part of Cairns where venues can trade until 3am.
Cairns Esplanade, Marina & Wharf
Bars along the Esplanade, Marlin Marina, the Pier and Wharf Street. Start here with sunset drinks, live music and weekend DJs, then walk a few minutes into the CBD for a later finish.
Airlie Beach
Airlie Beach
Everything worth staying up for is within a few hundred metres of the lagoon on Shute Harbour Road, a Safe Night Precinct where late venues can trade until 3am. Start at the beer gardens, finish upstairs at a club.
