Canberra

Getting home.

When the bars stop serving, what runs late and where to find a ride.

No lockouts

Canberra has no lockout. A proposed 3am closing time and lockout was dropped in 2016, and since January 2024 small licensed restaurants and cafes can trade until 2am. Most clubs run past midnight and a few trade until 3am, so check each venue’s hours.

Light rail

Light rail runs from Gungahlin Place to Alinga Street, with evening and weekend services every 15 minutes. The last service from Alinga Street is about 1am on Fridays and Saturdays and about 11:30pm on other nights, and the last from Gungahlin Place is about 12:30am on Fridays and Saturdays. These times come from the timetable and a 2026 Assembly submission, not a live feed, so check the Transport Canberra journey planner. The line is sometimes replaced by buses for Stage 2 works, so check service alerts.

Buses

There is no night bus network. Most routes stop between about 10pm and 11pm, and one venue operator told an ACT inquiry in March 2026 that the last bus leaves Civic at about 11pm. Rapid 2 (Fraser–Fyshwick), Rapid 3 (Spence–Airport via Belconnen and the City), Rapid 4 (Tuggeranong–Belconnen via the City) and Rapid 5 and 6 (Woden and Belconnen) run from City Interchange; check each route’s last service.

Fares

From 10 January 2026 an adult MyWay+ trip costs $3.41 in the peak and $2.70 off-peak, and anything after 6pm is off-peak. The daily cap is $10.16 on weekdays and $6.22 on weekends. Tap on and off with a contactless Visa or Mastercard (not American Express), using the same card or device both times. The free Friday and Saturday evening travel trial ran from 13 December 2025 to 28 February 2026 and has ended.

Taxis and rideshare

Access Canberra lists six late-night rideshare zones in the city centre: Northbourne Avenue opposite the Alinga Street stop (drop-off only, 9pm–6am), Platform 6 at City Interchange (12:30am–5am), Genge Street (6pm–6am), London Circuit outside Civic Square (12:30am–5am), the former City West bus station (12:30am–5am) and Alinga Street (9pm–5am). Taxis use separate zones at City Interchange. Supply is tight in the early hours, and Braddon and Kingston have no confirmed ranks, so book by app or phone there.

From the airport

Rapid 3 runs from Canberra Airport to City Interchange in under 20 minutes, every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 on weekends. Late at night, take a taxi or rideshare.

Light rail to Woden and the lake

Stage 2A (Alinga Street to Commonwealth Park) is under construction with no official opening date, and Woden (Stage 2B) is still in planning. There is no light rail to Kingston, Manuka or Woden in 2026.
