Northern Territory
Getting home.
When the bars stop serving, what runs late and where to find a ride, city by city.
Darwin
Late trading
Darwin has no lockouts. Sweethearts trades until 3am, and the Precinct, The Tap and Shenannigans until 2am. Laneway cocktail bars mostly close around midnight, so check each venue.
Taxis & rideshare
Taxis run 24 hours, and there’s a rank on Mitchell Street on weekend nights, plus ranks at the Knuckey Street end of Smith Street Mall and outside Mindil Beach Casino Resort. Darwin Radio Taxis 131 008, Blue Taxi Company 13 82 94. Uber operates in Darwin.
Buses
Darwin’s public buses have been free since 1 July 2025 and run most days from the Harry Chan Avenue interchange, but there’s no late-night service. Check the last bus on your route’s timetable or the NT Bus Tracker app.
Alcohol rules
You need photo ID (Australian or most overseas licences, or a passport) to buy takeaway alcohol anywhere in the NT, and drinking in public is banned in parts of Darwin.
Alice Springs
Late trading
It’s a small town. Bojangles goes to 2am Thursday to Saturday and Uncles to 1am, but most places close earlier, so plan on an earlier night than Darwin.
Taxis
Taxis are the way home. Alice Springs Taxis (08) 8952 1877 or 131 008, 13 CABS 13 2227, A&P Private Hire (08) 8953 3030. Book ahead on busy weekends.
Buses
Town buses are free but run Monday to Saturday only, with no Sunday or late-night services.
Alcohol rules
Carry photo ID. Takeaway alcohol isn’t sold on Mondays or Tuesdays, and drinking in public isn’t allowed. Since late 2025, many venues serve full-strength drinks only with a meal from 11:30am to 3pm Wednesday to Friday, and some pubs check ID at the door.
